Pluralistic Judaism in Calabria & Sicily
Following a successful rabbinate in southwest
Florida, Rabbi Barbara Aiello was named spiritual
leader of Synagogue Lev Chadash in Milan, the
first Progressive/liberal synagogue in Italy.

As the first Progressive and first woman rabbi in
Italy her appointment marked the official
beginning of the liberal Jewish movement in Italy.

Since her arrival in 2004, Rabbi Barbara has
assisted in the organization and growth of the
Progressive movement by serving chavurot in
Florence, Rome, Padova and as rabbinic advisor
to Chavurah Or Chadash in Turin, where she led
the first ever Progressive Rosh HaShanah service
in an Italian synagogue.

Services are held in Turin at Congregation Or Chadash, centrally
located in the downtown area., in Calabria at
Synagogue Ner Tamid
del Sud (“The Eternal Light of the South”), the first active synagogue in
Calabria in 500 years, and in Sicily where a new study group has formed
to bring pluralistic Judaism to families on the island.

Services are open to all and Rabbi Barbara welcomes friends and families
from all backgrounds and traditions.  Interfaith families are warmly
welcomed as well. The Rabbi says,
“We may have differences but
fundamentally we are all Jews.”

In Turin and Calabria you will hear the beautiful sounds of the shofar and
you’ll throw your sins away in a unique participatory Tashlich service.
Yom Kippur in Turin features a Yizkor Memorial service, the Neilah
Kohanim blessing with families wrapped togther in one tallit, and a light
Break The Fast snack.

In Sicily you will meet the “ushpizim” Biblical guests under the sukkah
and in Calabria dance with the Torah at Simchat Torah.

The High Holy Day
experience in Italy is lovely
and unique.  Serving three
pluralistic congregations
from Italy’s northern border
all the way to the island of
Sicily, Rabbi Barbara Aiello
offers local Italians and
worldwide guests an
opportunity to share Italian
traditions in welcoming the
Jewish Near Year 5769.
Sephardic Traditions for the New Year
In Sephardic Jewish homes there are several ways to prepare and
conduct the Rosh HaShanah seder.  The foods and blessings represent a
combination of Sephardic traditions from Italy, Gibraltar and Morocco.
