The Hakafah Torah Procession
The Rosh HaShanah Service, first ever Progressive High Holy Day Service in a traditional
Italian synagogue, and Torah Dedication were held on September 24, 2006. The
synagogue had not been used for religious services since 1980.
Ba'al Kore, Simeone Bordon who, in
addition to his Torah skills is a Formula
One Ferrari mechanic in Genova!
Gale Pollack, who spearheaded the effort to obtain the
Sefer Torah, receives her blessing. Gale is our "Woman
of Valor," as she and the congregation marry
themselves to a life of "Al Shlosha Devarim", a life of
Torah, prayer and deeds of living kindness.

Holding the chuppah are Italian Progressive Judaism
founders, Claudio Cannerutto(far right), Bruno di Porto
(left of Claudio), Roberto Sofia (Or Chadash Steering
Committee) with Rabbi Barbara Aiello. Gale Pollack
holds the Torah scroll.

to sound the shofar.
Rabbi Aiello sounds the shofar, exactly
131 years after the opening of the
synagogue on September 24, 1875.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Pollack
Family Foundation in Detroit and the
individual contributions of more than 100
individuals and families in Florida and New
York, Chavurah Or Chadash, the
Progressive Chavurah in Turin, Italy was the
grateful recipient of its first Sefer Torah. The
service of dedication which coincided with
the second day of Rosh HaShanah was held
on Sunday, September 24 in Ivrea, Italy.

During the dedication service the story of
the Sefer Torah was told by Gale Pollack,
director of the Pollack Family Foundation.
Gale, who brought the Torah from Tampa,
Florida where it was restored, shared that
the sefer was "born" in Northern Italy. Later
it made its way to Morocco then to a Yeshiva
in Jerusalem. "But finally," Gale said, "The
Torah has come home."
TORAH DEDICATION AND FIRST EVER PROGRESSIVE HIGH HOLY DAY
SERVICE HELD IN TRADITIONAL ITALIAN SYNAGOGUE
The old synagogue in Ivrea, just outside of Turin was
the setting for the service, conducted by Rabbi
Barbara Aiello, first Progressive and first woman
rabbi in Italy. Rabbi Aiello currently serves
Synagogue Ner Tamid del Sud in the deep south of
Italy where she has received a grant to develop a
Jewish cultural center to help Jews of Calabria return
to their roots..

The High Holy Day service was the FIRST EVER
High Holy Day Reform service held in a traditional
Italian synagogue! The old synagogue in Ivrea has
been closed for years. But Progressive Italian Jews
were able to make an arrangement with the
municipality to use it (the building is one of only two
older synagogues that are under the aegis of the
local community. All other synagogues, even those
closed and no longer in use are administered by the
orthodox Jewish community which does not recognize
Progressive Judaism or permit Progressive Jews to
hold services in any of these facilities.)
Services began with a "Hakafah"
procession where the Torah was carried
outside and around the synagogue.
Earlier, The Sofia-Levo family had
cleaned and polished the ark , bima and
the entire sanctuary tp ready the venue
for this historic occasion. Simeone
Bordon, Ba'al Kore from Genova and
Chiara Ferarrotti, lay service leader for
Or Chadash and rabbinic student
assisted Rabbi Aiello, who sounded the
shofar in a service that honors and
celebrates the Jewish New Year.
Gale Pollack was honored with a special
blessing under the chuppah. She held
the Torah as the congregation "married"
itself to the new scroll. Her blessing
included words from Proverbs, "A
Woman of Valor."

Invited guests included a cross section of
the entire Progressive communities in
Italy, Lev Chadash in Milan, Lev
Chadash a Roma, Or Chadash, Turin
and Ner Tamid del Sud, in Calabria. The
founders of the Progressive movement in
Italy, Claudio Cannerutto and Bruno di
Porto attended and addressed the group.
The synagogue was filled to capacity on
this historic day which coincided with
another important date. In 1875 on
September 24 the synagogue in Ivrea
was dedicated and used for the very first
time! So, 131 years ago EXACTLY the
new Sefer was dedicated! The Kabbalah
for this event, 1+3+1 = 5 for the Five
Books of Moses!
