How to Make Shavuot at Home

PREPARATION

Tallit, kipah, shofar two candles for Yom Tov, small candle for Yiskor memorial, flowers and greens on your table, Kiddush cup, cheese/bread/honey snack

SHAVUOT at YOUR FAMILY TABLE

Place flowers, greens, candles, Kiddush cup and snack on your table

Put on your tallit and kipah

Sound the Shofar (one long blast)

Light the memorial candle

Light the two candles – make the blessing for Yom Tov

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Yom Tov.

Sing a favorite Jewish song (He Ne Ma Tov, Oseh Shalom, etc.) Tell the story of Ruth (find it at www.RabbiBarbara.com)

Begin Yiskor service with a reading of the 23rd psalm

Talk together about loved ones who have passed on.

Rise and recite the Mourner’s Kaddish

Bless family and friends with the Kohanim Blessing (see below)

Lift the Kiddush cup and make the wine blessing

Lift the snack plate – (pita bread with ricotta and drizzle of honey) and make HaMotzi

Greet each other with “Chag Shavuot Sameach”

Conclude with a favorite Jewish song

Ye-va-rach-ah Adonai ve-yish-me-recha

Ti benedica Dio e ti costudisca

May G-d bless you and keep you

Y-eir Adonai pa-nav ei-lech-cha vi-chu-necha

Rivolga Dio il Suo volto verso di te, e ti dia grazia

May the light of G-d shine upon you

and may G-d be gracious to you

Yi-sa Adonai pa-nav ei-le-cha ve-ya-seim le-cha shalom

Rivolga Dio il Suo volto verso di te e ti conceda la pace

May G-d’s presence be with you and give you peace.
