Irene Shaland is an internationally published art and travel writer, Jewish historian, and educator.
Irene’s research, publications, and lectures are focused on the multiple issues illuminating diaspora identity, the rich tapestry of global Jewish experiences, culture, and heritage. Irene also concentrates on the Anousim movement and the twenty-first-century Jewish renaissance in the Mediterranean. She is currently working on her fourth book exploring Jewish history in Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, Malta, and Corsica.
Irene’s close to 30 articles were published in the US, Canada, UK, France, South Africa, and Israel. Her third book “The Dao of Being Jewish and Other Stories” was released in 2016 and is full of tales of Jewish diaspora, persecution, the Holocaust and rebirth in Europe, Africa and Asia in ten countries on three continents.
Irene presents extensively at conferences (i.e., Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies); in academic institutions (i.e., Touro Law School, New York; Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland); museums (i.e., Museum of Jewish Heritage, Battery Park, New York; Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Cleveland, Cleveland Natural History Museum); research centers (i.e., Center for Jewish History Research, New York); synagogues; JCCs; Jewish Federations; art galleries; art societies; and libraries in Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit, New York/New Jersey area, Santa Fe, NM, and Tulsa OK. She also lectures on various countries’ responses to the Holocaust, for such organizations in New York City as Anti-Defamation League, Hidden Child Foundation, NAHOS, Holocaust Resource Center of New Jersey, and others.
